This project could not run without the assistance of our amazing volunteers. Students in the EDUC 2120 course at KSU are required to complete 15 hours of field experience in a setting with diverse students. They sign up for the project through VKSU (Volunteer KSU). The Cuentos volunteers work with small groups or one-on-one to develop a rapport with the students, help them with brainstorming topics for stories, assist with revising and editing, and serve as tutors, friends, and a support for the students' storysharing efforts. The students look forward to seeing the volunteers, and the volunteers share their own life experiences as university students, serving as aspirational role models.
Once you are a member of the Cuentos de Mi Vida team, you are part of the Cuentos family forever!
Logging over 100 hours total each semester, Cuentos volunteers make a difference in our Hasty authors' lives. A number of our volunteers return the next semester even though they have satisfied the field experience hour requirement! In addition, they donate their extra "swipes"--meals at the Commons--so that the Hasty authors can eat at the Commons when they visit campus. Finally, our volunteers are on hand to host the Hasty authors when they visit campus each semester, again even after their field experience hours have been satisfied! One of our volunteers this semester also spent a Friday evening at Hasty's Spring Fling, where the student authors presented their digital stories for parents, families, and visitors.
Special recognition goes to Ms. Jinny Kim, our volunteer coordinator, who began her work with Cuentos in the Spring 2014 semester when for some reason no one came forward from EDUC 2120 to volunteer. Jinny was an MEd student in TESOL, and volunteered simply out of interest in the project. She continued as a graduate assistant for the project in Fall 2014 and as a student teacher for Mr. Thompson during her final semester in our MEd program. Jinny has been tremendously instrumental in moving the project forward!
As you can see, our volunteers are quite special and critical to the success of the project! Below is a listing of our Cuentos volunteers by semester, beginning with the current semester.
